Producing Software, the Easy Way

OK, so the post title is a total lie. There really is no easy way to produce and sell software. There are varying degrees of difficulty that can be associated with software development, though.

When I started working on iRooster I never really intended for it to turn into something that I would sell for profit. It simply didn’t occur to me. Rather, my interest in it was that it scratched a personal itch (this is a recurring theme in discussions on “how do I come up with an idea for software to make?”).

Allow me to set the stage for you: I’m 20 years old, I’m taking no less than 19 credits per semester in college, and I’m sure-as-hell not sleeping enough. As any normal, rational college student would do, I tried to ameliorate the effects this could have; I push my classes back and refuse to take anything that starts before 10am, or 11am when I can wrangle it. Unfortunately, this didn’t solve my problem at all. I was still missing my morning classes without fail. My alarm clock wasn’t cutting it for waking me up; I slept right through the alarm, or I would wake up long enough to turn it off and then roll over and go back to sleep.

Obviously, I needed a solution to this problem. I could have gone to bed earlier, but nah. Instead, I made myself a new, better alarm clock. iRooster started off simply: it was a single window application with a text field for entering a date and time. It had a hard-coded playlist specified in it, and would start iTunes at the time specified with my playlist. I started leaving my Powerbook on my desk, plugging my PC’s speakers into it, slipped the subwoofer underneath my bed, and never had any trouble waking up again. Neither did my roommates, unfortunately. iRooster would wake them up as well, much to their chagrin.

Site Redesign and More Pix

I’ve started on a site redesign, as you may have noticed. So far, the main page of the site and my résumé have been converted over. Still to come: the (woefully out of date) Code section, this Weblog, Photos, and the nonexistent About page.

Additionally, I finally finished moving all of my pictures over to the Gallery 2 install I have, instead of the brutally awful iPhoto-generated page I was using before.

X360 Launch Titles

“Amped 3” (2K Sports)
I’ve been an SSX fan ever since it was a PS2 launch title, and I’ve never given Amped the time of day. A review on Gamespot just made me think I should reconsider, though. “A huge part of what makes the story so appealing–and, really Amped 3 in general–is the game’s incredibly inspired, enthusiastic art style. Cutscenes are rendered with 8-bit graphics, sock puppets, full-motion video, anime, stop-motion animation, comic books, and stock educational film footage, all the while pulling from influences ranging from The Yellow Submarine to Entertainment Tonight.”

“Call of Duty 2” (Activision Inc.)
I’ll be picking this up with the console. End of story.

“Condemned: Criminal Origins” (SEGA Corp.)
I’ll probably get this after it drops in price.

“FIFA Soccer 06Road to 2006 FIFA World Cup” (Electronic Arts Inc.)
Don’t care.

“GUN™” (Activision)
Sounds absolutely terrible from all the reviews I’ve read.

“Kameo: Elements of Power” (Microsoft Game Studios and Rare Ltd.)
I’ll be getting this at the Company Store as soon as possible.

“Madden NFL 06” (Electronic Arts)
Don’t care.

“NBA 2K6” (2K Sports)
Don’t care.

“NBA LIVE 06” (Electronic Arts)
Don’t care. (seeing a pattern?)

“Need for Speed Most Wanted” (Electronic Arts)
Meh, PGR3.

“NHL 2K6” (2K Sports)
Don’t care.

“Perfect Dark Zero” (Microsoft Game Studios and Rare Ltd.)
Picking this up ASAP.

“Peter Jackson’s King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie” (Ubisoft)
I’m going to hold off on this for a while, but the idea of fucking up T-Rexes with a gigantic ape has a certain…appeal for me :-) .

“Project Gotham Racing 3” (Microsoft Game Studios and Bizarre Creations Ltd.)
Yep, I’ll be getting this.

“Quake 4™” (id Software and Activision)
A perfect title to pick up once it drops to thirty bucks.

“Ridge Racer 6” (Namco Ltd.)
Meh, we’ll see. PGR3.

“Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 06” (Electronic Arts)
Don’t care.

“Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland” (Activision)
Don’t care.

Catching Up

The past few weeks have been insanely busy for me. I became sick the week before I moved out of my old apartment in Queen Anne, which interfered greatly with my ability to pack and move. The timing of my illness was especially poor: my entire team took three days off to celebrate shipping Visual Studio 2005, and I spent this entire time in bed. Were I lacking in sick days this would not have been a problem, but as it stands I still have 9 days that will expire at the end of the calendar year. Sigh. On the plus (?) side of things, I still have over two weeks of vacation time, even after my trip to Hawaii, so I’m not really hurting in that arena.

Hawaii was fantastic; I spent a week in Honolulu on Oahu across teh street from Waikiki Beach and my daily schedule looked something like this:
– Wake up around 8:30, go downstairs for the complimentary breakfast.
– Eat, shower, and lounge around for a couple hours. Occasionally Helen and I would spice this up by working for an hour or so, but this was relatively rare.
– Head across the street to the beach and lay there for 3-4 hours.
– Go back to the hotel and take a nap.
– Wake up in time to get dinner, and go wandering around afterwards.
– Return to our hotel room, perhaps watch Comedy Central for an hour and then fall asleep.
– Later, rinse, repeat. For a week.

I feel so much better now: relaxed, rejuvinated, and so forth. I didn’t realize how much I needed a break from everyday life until I was afforded the opportunity. Note to self: take more vacations :-) .

Work this past week has been absolutely insane: we’re gearing up for a series of pre-Orcas reviews, and I’ve been spending every waking moment working on, thinking about, or fretting over my presentation.

The one real highlight of this week came yesterday afternoon when I finally received my dreaded EB Games phone call. I’ve been waiting to hear from the store manager to confirm my pre-order status for an XBox 360 on launch day. As it works out, my pre-order on June 17th was early enough to afford me one of the precious few consoles they have been sent. So, next Monday I’ll stay in Redmond until Midnight and then head over to the EB Games at the Redmond Town Center to pick up my new toy (woo!). I have Call of Duty 2 reserved, and I plan on picking up Perfect Dark Zero, Kameo, and Project Gotham Racing 3 from the MS Company Store Tuesday morning sometime.

I’d love to stay home from work on Tuesday to play around with the XBox 360, but Real Work Stuff conflicts and, of course, I need to be around to get my new laptop (Sony Vaio S580), which should be coming in on Tuesday as well.

I’m Minneapolis-bound on the Wednesday night Red-Eye, due to arrive around 5AM at the Humphrey Terminal (Sun Country Airlines flight). The current debate here centers around whether I should bring the XBox with me as carry-on luggage or not. We’ll see. It seems excessive, but then again, so does spending $400 for a video game system on the day of its launch.

I have pictures of Hawaii to put online sometime soon.

Burrito

Fuck, I want a burrito right now. H.U.N.G.R.Y. B.U.R.R.I.T.O. I think I’m going to go buy one. The advantages of living across the street from a 24 hour QFC that carries organic bean and cheese burritos are many. The disadvantages inherent to the situation, though, are that I have to fend off hobos to get there. C’est la vie.

Terms I Never Want to Hear Again

Ajax
Attention Economy
Disruptive Technology
“Gadget” (in the context Scoble uses it in)
Mash-Up
Web 2.0

I don’t particularly care about Zvents. It feels like the Stranger’s Calendar on steroids. Nothing more, nothing less.

That’s it for the time being I believe.
