Fugliness, thy name is iTunes 7.0

by aaron on September 14th, 2006

While I was off recruiting impressionable, young college students to come join Microsoft over the past two days, Apple announced a slew of updates, including a new version of iTunes. Unfortunately, Apple seems to have beaten iTunes 7 with the ugly stick. The best-looking new feature in the product seems oddly reminiscent of another media player, but I just can’t put my finger on which one…

In all seriousness, though, iTunes 7 does seem to have some nice features, but the UI has taken a major step backwards. I feel somewhat compelled to mimic its UI in iRooster, but it’ll hurt to do so. A lot.

More round-ups are located on another page on the aforementioned site.

This seems to be a bit out of character for Apple. The majority of their market share was built on good design, after all Mac’s were once seen as the tool of the professional designer as opposed to PC’s that were seen as a generic business tool. This emphasis on design really continued with the Ipod that was designed to be fashionable in order to make it a desirable product to young people, presumably because they were seen at the time as being the most likely to download music from the internet. Maybe the apparent slip in the design of Itunes signals that Apple are moving away from chasing the fashionable youngsters or maybe that the fashionable youngsters are moving away from Itunes because Itunes is no longer seen as being fashionable.
