Mac users only care about the HIG when it's convenient to do so. Basically, it's acceptable to ignore the HIG if it's cool and pretty. But when someone doesn't find it cool or pretty, they'll be certain to tell you it's a bug because it's against the HIG. :-) Having developed software for the Mac for the last five years, I’ve learned something interesting.
